Serving on the Executive Committee alongside these three will be three newly elected Vice Chairs: Megan Richards, Parliamentary Chief of Staff to Henry Tufnell MP; sports policy consultant and football coach Duncan McVey; and DRD Partnership public affairs specialist Nathan Ashley.

The Society also established a Steering Committee encompassing the above plus: Ben Procter, Change Manager at Law Firm Clyde & Co, as Scotland Lead; Red Rose Associates Founding Partner Paul Nicholson as Parliamentary Officer; gold-medal cyclist Lewis Stewart as Youth Officer; Megan Richards as interim Wales Lead; Tower Hamlets elected member Cllr Tarik Khan as Membership Officer; sports policy expert Andy Reed OBE as Policy Officer; and DRD Partnership Partner Jon McLeod as Communications Officer. The Society is still recruiting for an Events Officer.

Senior Advisors to support the work of the Society were also nominated in the shape of: Croydon councillor and Cromwell Green founder Louis Carserides; political commentator and consultant Suzy Stride; football commentator and legend Clive Tyldesley; leading sports TV producer Annie Barker; and freelance journalist Shamik Das.

Commenting on the elections, Labour Society for Sport Chair Stuart Brady said: “I am personally delighted to have been re-elected as Chair and I would like to extend my congratulations to all of those who will be taking the Society forward in the coming year.

“Through a considerable amount of hard work we have got the Society into a good position to drive the debate in the Labour Party and among fellow travellers about the role of sport in our society and economy. I am looking forward to another busy year of events and policy engagement, bolstered by a first-class team of energetic thinkers and doers.”

Conference breakfast with Florence Eshalomi MP

We were delighted to partner with DRD Partners to bring together some of the highest profile organisations from across sport and industry for a detailed conversation with Chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee. Given that so much sports and leisure provision is delivered via local government it was an important conversation as we seek to rebuild the public realm after 14 years of neglect.

The inaugural Labour Sports Dinner

Taking place the day after the general election was called in May, the Labour Sports Dinner had a real buzz about it.

We were lucky to hear from major names from across the sporting world including, rugby league’s Jamie Jones-Buchanen MBE, rugby union’s Brian Moore, triple gold medal winning rower Andy Triggs-Hodge OBE, England netballer and Gladiators referee Sonia Mkoloma, and many others. The election meant that Bridget Philpson and Thangam Debbonaire had to pull out, but we were fortunate that our sport-loving, Schools Minister Catherine McKinnell and Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock both spoke at the event.

The event proved itself to be one of the absolute highlights in Labour’s annual social calendar, with guest enjoying the stunning venue, professional production and high standard of catering.
